India

This information is intended to be read in conjunction with Credit for Prior Learning in the Education of Registered Nurses.

The Indian Nursing Council Act 1947 established the Indian Nursing Council with functions including recognition of qualifications for the purpose of registration and employment in other countries.

There are universities of varying standards in India.  Even though some are listed as "Higher Education, section 1" by  AEI-NOOSR, they are also listed as providers of lower level education as well and it is difficult to be confident of the standards in such institutions. Further, it has not been possible to confirm that any of these universities is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council to conduct nursing courses. Consequently all nursing graduates from India must undertake further study as provided in Category Two in the Nurses and Midwives Board guidelines.

Where a person seeks credit in Category Four, it might be appropriate if the university at which prior study was undertaken is listed by AEI-NOOSR as "Higher Education, section 1" in India without also being listed in a second category such as "Higher Education, section 2" or "Technical and Vocational Education".  At this time, it has not been possible to identify any such institutions.
